1907-1909 PC805 Novelty Cutlery Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,115

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Only one example graded higher. Magnificent example of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in a throwing pose from the rare and highly regarded PC805 postcard set issued by the Novelty Cutlery Co. of Canton, Ohio, in 1907. The PC805 series is universally recognized as one of the most desirable of all baseball postcard issues. These cards have always been appreciated by collectors both for their extreme rarity and distinctive style. This very attractive example of Christy Mathewson is one of only fifteen Hall of Famers in the Novelty Cutlery set. The card has a few small, light creases (mainly in the upper and lower right corners), and even corner wear. It is very crisp and clean. The reverse has been addressed and mailed. Do not be fooled by the modest grade! This card has an appearance far superior to its SGC-assigned grade (and has been downgraded due to having been addressed and mailed, which is standard for SGC postcard grading). This is a stunning and exceptionally rare card of one of the era's most legendary stars. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
