Circa 1962 Mickey Mantle/Roger Maris Baseball Radio

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,645

The excitement generated by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris' historic pursuit of Babe Ruth's single-season home-run record in 1961 quickly resulted in the manufacture of a multitude of retail products bearing their endorsement. One of the most attractive such items from the era was a baseball-theme radio produced by Stellar. Offered here is a fine example of that classic piece. Housed within a wood case, the unit has a molded plastic front featuring the raised-relief image of a generic batter (in a Yankees uniform) displayed over the speaker panel. In keeping with the baseball motif, the green on/off knob is diamond-shaped; however, the original tuning knob, which was in the form of a baseball bat, has been replaced with a generic knob from the era. The facsimile signatures of Mantle and Maris appear along the base. We have briefly tested the radio and it appears to be in working order, but, as always, when dealing with very old electrical pieces we recommend that the winning bidder first have it examined by a qualified electrician prior to operating it. Both the facing and wood casing display light-to-moderate wear. Excellent condition overall. Dimensions: 7 (W) x 3.75 (D) x 5.25 (H) inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,645
