1921 New York Yankees World Series Pennant

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $11,750

Incredibly rare New York Yankees pennant issued in commemoration of the club's inaugural World Series appearance in 1921. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of only three known examples of this pennant. The first example was featured in the historic Barry Halper auction in 1999, where it realized a final sales price of $7,475. The second example, in slightly higher grade than the Halper pennant, sold more recently at public auction in 2008 for $13,200. Its rarity aside, this might also be the earliest known Yankees pennant, as we have never seen an example predating it. As can be seen even at a glance, it is also a simply stunning pennant in terms of design. The blue-felt pennant features an illustration of a generic Yankees player in full windup on the left side, while the team name, "Yankees" is displayed on the main body of the piece. The notation "World Series" is lettered within the design of the illustrated player, to the right of which is the year, "1921." The pennant (28 inches in length) has obviously been very well cared for. It has been preserved beautifully and displays very little wear. In Excellent condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $11,750
