Circa 1916 Boston Red Sox Pennant
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $940
Rare Boston Red Sox World Championship pennant dating from the team's 1912 to 1918 dynasty. The attractive design of this oversized red felt pennant displays the team name, "Red Sox," in large white "shadow box" letters alongside a circular illustration featuring a crossed bats, ball, and bases motif that reads "Boston Red Sox Base Ball Club - Worlds Champions." The absence of a year as part of the design of this piece has always led to some ambiguity regarding its date of issue; the Vintage Pennant Price Guide (by Mike Egner, published 2009; highly recommended!) attributes it to 1918, the year of Boston's fourth and final World Championship of the decade, although we think a strong case can be made that it actually dates from 1916. All Boston Red Sox pennants dating from the period 1912 through 1918 are extremely rare and we have seen only a few other examples of this particular style. The pennant (32.5 inches in length) displays four tack holes (three in the top corner and one in the bottom corner), including one located within the white-felt border stripe that has been repaired. Light surface wear is apparent, which is to be expected with such an early pennant; but this is a particularly strong example for graphics, with the white paint approximately ninety-nine percent intact, and with only a few small areas of light crazing. Each of the original corner tassels remains intact. This is a magnificent pennant from the glory days of the Red Sox dynasty. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
