1904-1913 Complete Run of Sporting Life Baseball Schedules (12)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,406
Complete run of Sporting Life Major League Baseball schedules spanning the years 1904 through 1913. This is the first complete set of these schedule booklets we have ever seen, let alone offered. (Late Note: We have learned a 1914 edition exists, which is not included here. Eastern League editions also exist.) Each example is a rarity in its own right. (As a point of reference, a single example from 1904 sold for $1,763 in Robert Edward Auctions' May 2010 sale.) The schedules for the years 1904 through 1907 are the most substantial in the group, measuring 4 x 5 inches, and are also notable for the fact they feature composite photos of each Major League team on the page opposite its respective home and away schedule. Collectors will immediately recognize these team composite images as being the very same as the W601 Sporting Life premiums that were available from the company by mail; and, in fact, an advertisement for the W601 team composites with instructions on how to order them appears below each team composite image. In essence, each schedule booklet from 1904 through 1907 provides a "mini-W601" complete set within its pages, advertising for the current W601 set, and features photographs of every member of every team in both the National and American Leagues , not to mention schedules for each team for the entire season. The remaining schedule booklets (1908 to 1913) continue to provide composite photos of each club, only they are not the same team composites featured in the W601 premiums (the team premiums ended after the 1909 season, although team premiums were issued in 1910 for the respective league champions). Another distinguishing feature of these booklets are their unique design: they are essentially two booklets in one. Except for the years 1909 and 1910, each of the individually bound American and National League schedule booklets share a common back cover, thereby making it a double-sided booklet, in essence two booklets attached, with two front covers (one for each league). The booklets from 1904 through 1907 measure 4 x 6 inches. The booklets dating from 1908 to 1913 measure 2.5 x 4.5 inches. All are complete as issued and remain firmly bound by their original staples. Comprised of the following: 1904 (Vg; light pencil notation on an interior cover); 1905 (Vg-Ex); 1906 (Ex); 1907 (tiny edge tear to one of the covers; otherwise Ex-Mt); 1908 (Vg); 1909 American League (Ex-Mt); 1909 National League (Ex); 1910 American League (Ex-Mt); 1910 National League (Ex-Mt); 1911 (Ex); 1912 (Vg); and 1913 (Vg). This is a remarkable collection. These schedule booklets have been totally overlooked by most collectors (primarily because they have never seen one) and would be a very significant and worthy addition to even the most advanced collection. Total: 12 schedule booklets. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
