1887 Boston (vs. New York) National League Scorecard - N172 Old Judge Advertising Cover

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,645

Fold-over scorecard issued for a National League game between the Boston Beaneaters and the New York Giants in 1887 at the South End Grounds in Boston. This rare and attractive program style is particularly significant, both to program and card collectors, because of what is displayed on the cover. The central image features an illustration of a generic ballplayer attempting to catch a pop fly, below which is the phrase "It's Over Your Head." While the image is finely rendered and attractive, it is what surrounds it that is the focus of collectors today: advertising for the then just released baseball-card series issued by "Old Judge Cigarettes." The text of the advertising, which runs across the top and bottom as well as both sides, boldly announces "Photographs of $10,000 Kelly, the Boston Team and all the Professional Ball Players Packed In Every Package of Old Judge Cigarettes." On the back cover are advertisements for several local Boston establishments, including Wright & Ditson Sporting Goods. 1887 was Mike "King" Kelly's first season in Boston and he was known as "$10,000 Kelly" because that was the then unprecedented amount Boston paid Chicago for his contract. The preprinted lineups include "King" Kelly and "Hoss" Radbourn for Boston and Buck Ewing, John Ward, Roger Connor, Jim O'Rourke, and Mickey Welch for New York. The program, printed by John B. Sage of Buffalo, N.Y., has been neatly scored in pencil and records a 19-9 extra-inning victory by Boston. Research indicates that the only 19-9 home victory over New York that season occurred as the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, June 17th. The scorecard (4.25 x 7 inches) remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,645
