Two 1990 Signed Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Day Photo Displays (Ex-Halper) Each with 31 Signatures

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $823

The annual Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies have always represented a bonanza for autograph collectors due to the large number of former inductees who return each year to honor the newest class. One person who realized early on the potential such a gathering held was world-famous collector Barry Halper. Barry knew that each year the Hall produced an official 14 x 11-inch Hall of Fame induction photo. The problem, however, was obvious. The photos were not printed until a short time later, well after the Hall of Fame contingent had left. To get one completely signed would then entail tremendous effort and expense. To solve that problem, Barry had a matting made that was sized to cover a 14 x 11-inch print. Barry then had all of the Hall of Famers pictured in each year's respective Hall of Fame induction photo sign the matting, which he then paired with the photo weeks later. It was a practice he successfully used many times during the 1980s and 1990s; today, to the best of our knowledge, all of these Hall of Fame signed matted displays originate from Barry. Also, needless to say, Barry obtained all of the signatures on these matted displays personally at the ceremony, which he attended annually. Offered here are two such near-identical examples dating from 1990, the year in which Jim Palmer and Joe Morgan were inducted. Thirty-five individuals are pictured in the photo, including both 1990 inductees, former inductees, and Hall of Fame and Major League Baseball officials. Amazingly, Barry acquired the signatures of thirty-one of the thirty-five individuals pictured that day on each mat: Ted Williams, Eddie Mathews, Ray Dandridge, Al Lopez, Billy Herman, Bob Lemon, Joe Morgan, Duke Snider, Jim Palmer, Willie McCovey, Charlie Gehringer, Red Schoendienst, Warren Spahn, Bob Doerr, Billy Williams, Fay Vincent (Commissioner of Baseball), George Kell, Bill White (National League president), Johnny Mize, Enos Slaughter, Brooks Robinson, Yogi Berra, Bobby Brown (American League president), Rick Ferrell, Pee Wee Reese, Bob Feller, Monte Irvin, Stan Musial, Ralph Kiner, Robin Roberts, and Al Barlick. The four signatures not obtained on either mat are those of Roy Campanella, Buck Leonard, Happy Chandler, and Ed Stack (president of the Hall of Fame). (Campanella, Leonard, and Chandler are all pictured in wheel chairs and were probably not physically able to sign at the time.) All of the signatures, on each matting, have been flawlessly scripted in black Sharpie and grade "10." It should be noted that each matting (20 x 15 inches) is not affixed to its respective cardboard backing; otherwise each is in Near Mint condition. Total: 2 signed displays (each with 31 HOF signatures). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $823
