1980-2001 Perez-Steele Autographed Hall of Fame Postcard Set - Fifty-Three Signed Cards

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $5,288

This complete set of Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcards is comprised of 275 cards (including all fifteen checklist cards) and features fifty-three signed examples. Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcards, which are universally recognized as one of the most classic issues ever produced for autograph collectors, were originally issued in fifteen individual series between 1980 and 2001. With the exception of seven cards (featuring Hall of Fame Officials, Perez-Steele Gallery executives, and other non-ballplayers) only Baseball Hall of Fame members are included in the set. Each card was limited to a print run of 10,000 and every card is individually numbered on the reverse. Of the 275 cards in the set, only 104 could possibly have been signed by Hall of Fame players (the balance of the players passed away prior to the date of publication). The offered collection features fifty-three signed Hall of Fame player cards. All of the cards are from set number "02458." The signed cards in this set were mostly obtained by our consignor through mail requests. As a result, the collection includes a few additional pieces of correspondence from players or their wives, including a short note from Joe Sewell and a signed index card from Earl Averill. Unless otherwise noted, each signature has been scripted, in a variety of inks (mostly Sharpie) on the front and grades either "9" or "10." Organized by series, the following are the fifty-three Hall of Fame player signed cards in this collection: Second Series: Gehringer; Third Series: Dickey, Terry, DiMaggio (signed on reverse), Lyons (signed on reverse), Greenberg ("7"), Feller (signed on reverse and dated "5-24-81") and Roush (signed on reverse); Fourth Series: Appling (signed on reverse), Grimes (signed on reverse), T. Williams, L. Waner, Coveleski, Hoyt (signed on reverse), Musial (personalized "To Martin/Best Wishes"), and Boudreau (signed on the reverse); Fifth Series: Berra, Koufax ("6/7"), Leonard (signed on the front, grading "3/4" and again on the reverse, grading "10"), Wynn, Irvin, Kelly ("8"), Spahn, Bell ("7"), Conlan, Ford, Mantle, Averill, Herman ("8"), and J. Johnson ("3"); Sixth Series: Kiner, Lemon ("7"), Roberts, Lopez, Sewell, Mathews ("5/6"), Kaline, Snider, and Mize; Seventh Series: Kell and B. Robinson; Eighth Series: Aparicio, Drysdale, Ferrell, Killebrew, Brock, and Slaughter; Ninth Series: Doerr, Dandridge, Hunter, B. Williams; Tenth Series: (no signed cards from the tenth series); Eleventh Series: Morgan and Perry; Twelfth Series: (no signed cards from the twelfth series); Thirteenth Series: (no signed cards from the thirteenth series); Fourteenth Series: (no signed cards from the fourteenth series); Fifteenth Series: (no signed cards from the fifteenth series). The signed card of Willie Mays in this set features a classic secretarial signature. The cards are in overall Nr-Mt condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 275 cards (53 signed). Reserve $500.
