Circa 1940 Babe Ruth Signed Photo with Extraordinary "10" Signature!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,113

Haunting portrait photo of Babe Ruth, dating from the twilight of his career, beautifully signed by Ruth in black fountain pen. Ruth has inscribed the photo "To my friend/Fred Welainer/From/Babe Ruth" directly below his image. Both Ruth's inscription and signature are boldly penned, grading "10," and contrast exceptionally well against the white background. This particular photo was specially produced for use as a presentation piece and the exceptionally large white margin areas were a deliberate feature in order to give Ruth ample room for signing and including a personal inscription. This is a particularly extraordinary Ruth photo in all respects and one that looks exactly as it did moments after Ruth signed it. The signature and inscription could not be any finer. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays minor peripheral flaws, including a tiny corner chip in the lower right and minor creasing along the borders. However, nearly all of the aforementioned flaws have been matted out, and the photo, which is now housed in a handsome wood frame (11.25 x 13.25 inches) and protected with UV light-blocking glass, displays beautifully as Excellent. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $4,113
