Circa 1939 High-Grade Babe Ruth Single-Signed Baseball

Starting Bid - $4,000, Sold For - $16,450

Tremendous Spalding "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" baseball single-signed by Babe Ruth across the sweet spot. Ruth's signature has been beautifully scripted in blue ink, grading "8/9," and contrasts exceptionally well against the cream-colored surface. This is an incredible Ruth ball! In addition to the near flawless signature, the ball itself is distinguished by its remarkable state of preservation. All of the manufacturer's stampings remain bold and bright, and except for some very modest surface wear, the ball is in Near Mint condition, appearing much as it did when originally signed by Ruth. The ball's extraordinary condition is directly related to its remarkable provenance. This ball has been the prized possession of our consignor (who is eighty-years old) for seventy years and has only seen the light of day on those rare occasions when she proudly took it out to show her guests. In her accompanying one-page letter, our consignor details the ball's history. In full: "Between 1939 and early 1940's my father obtained a Spalding Home Run Special Ball, signed by Babe Ruth. It was a souvenir at a father and son get together (Shrine, I think, if I remember correctly). When my dad brought it home to me I was thrilled and it became my most treasured possession. I only hope the next one to own it will appreciate the treasure it is." While Ruth signed many baseballs, carefully cared for surviving high-grade examples, such as this, are most definitely the exception rather than the rule. This is one of the finest signed examples of a "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" ball we have ever seen, let alone handled. This is a Ruth single-signed ball that would be a highlight in even the most discriminating world-class collection! We have always been particularly partial to Ruth-signed "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" baseballs. Any style baseball single-signed by Ruth is extremely desirable, but a Spalding Ruth-endorsed "Home Run Special" is naturally a special classic, ideal for display, all the more so when it is in Near Mint condition as is the case here, let alone one with such remarkable original-owner provenance. Together with remnants of the original box. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $8,000+. SOLD FOR $16,450
