Circa 1936 New York Yankees Signed Scorecard with Gehrig, Lazzeri, and Hornsby

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,938

Long-treasured family keepsake: Vintage New York Yankees scorecard signed on the front in both pencil and black fountain pen by seven players, including Lou Gehrig. Ideally, Gehrig's signature is one of the strongest examples (grading "10"), and is also perfectly situated on a blank portion of the illustrated cover for optimal display value. The remaining black fountain pen signatures are those of Tony Lazzeri, Bob Feller, Ben Chapman, and Sam Chapman. The two pencil signatures belong to Rogers Hornsby and Bill Dickey. All of the signatures are boldly executed, grading either "9" or "10." Based upon the interior preprinted lineup for the Yankees and the addresses listed in the advertisements, the program appears to be from a spring-training exhibition game held in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1936. This scorecard has been in our consignor's family ever since it was first obtained by her grandfather in 1936 (she told us he was friendly with many Major League players) and is therefore new to the hobby. Given the signatures, it was probably signed over a period of time, especially considering the fact that Sam Chapman began his Major League career in 1938 and Feller made his Major League debut with Cleveland on July 19, 1936. The fold-over program has been slightly trimmed along three borders to its current dimensions (7 x 9 inches, folded) and displays a light vertical fold. Without regard to the trimming, the scorecard is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,938
