1934-1936 R318 Batter-Up Autographed Card Collection with Foxx and Ott (6)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,406

Collection of six different 1934-1936 R318 Batter-Up cards, each signed on the front in black fountain pen by the respective player: Jimmie Foxx (grading "10"), Mel Ott ("6"), Rogers Hornsby (9/10"), Al Simmons ("10"), Lefty Grove ("9," blue fountain pen), and Jim Bottomley ("6/7, bleeding). Autographed baseball cards have always been a popular area of collecting. Signed examples from early issues such as this, especially those featuring vintage signatures from the period, are rare and highly prized by collectors. Issued by National Chicle over a three-year period, Batter-Up cards differ from most cards in that they were die-cut. That novel production method allowed collectors of the day to fold down the top of the card so that it could stand upright on its own. All of the cards offered here remain in their original, unfolded state with tops intact; however, none are technically high grade, with various, mostly small, faults. The Grove and Simmons cards display areas of staining (not affecting signatures); the remaining four cards display exceptionally well. The Foxx is particularly strong. Foxx and Ott are of special note as both are key signed card rarities for a 500 Home Run signed-card collection, a very popular area of collecting. For optimal display purposes, each card has been individually mounted (most likely by means of adhesive on the reverse) and framed together with a Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcard of the respective player. Frame dimensions range from 11.5 x 9.5 inches to 9 x 15 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 6 signed cards, each in its own individual frame. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $4,406
