Circa 1927 Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, and Bob Shawkey Signed Baseball
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,115
Vintage "Boys Favorite" baseball signed in black fountain pen by four members of the 1927 New York Yankees: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, and Bob Shawkey. Ruth's signature occupies its customary place of honor on the sweet spot (grading "5"), while those of Gehrig ("5/6"), Lazzeri ("1," barely legible), and Shawkey ("5") are each scripted on a separate side panel. Ruth, Gehrig, Shawkey, and Lazzeri only played together on the Yankees in 1926 and 1927; therefore it seems reasonable to assume that this ball was obtained in one of those two seasons. The ball, which displays no additional manufacturer's stampings other than "Boys Favorite," is obviously a youth ball, as it is slightly smaller in circumference (8.5 inches as opposed to 9.25 inches) than a regulation ball. The ball has been coated with an uneven layer of protective shellac which has darkened with age and displays moderate crazing upon its surface. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,115
