1915 John McGraw Signed Photo

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,233

Formal studio photo of John McGraw, inscribed and dated in black fountain pen at the base of the mount "Sincerely yours, John J. McGraw - 1915." Both the inscription and McGraw's signature are boldly penned, grading "9/10." This piece comes with a wonderful story regarding its discovery that will make most collectors green with envy. Our consignor purchased this piece many years ago at an antiques store. At the time, the photo was housed in a small oval frame that covered the mount, so only the image of McGraw was visible. Because the signature was hidden, the owner of the store obviously had no idea who the subject was and our consignor found it in a box containing a number of old, unidentified portrait images. As a baseball collector, he instantly recognized McGraw and purchased it for a very modest sum. Content with simply having a very nice studio portrait of McGraw, one can imagine his joy when he later removed it from the frame to check its condition and discovered the hidden inscription. If only we could all be so lucky! This is a remarkably high quality photograph and signed mount. The oval photo (3.75 x 5.25 inches) is affixed to its cardboard mount; otherwise in Near Mint condition. The mount (6 x 9 inches) is hand cut and displays light surface wear. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,233
