1889 N172 Old Judge Ed Delahanty - Fielding Grounder

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $5,288

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Extremely rare and desirable 1889 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer Ed Delahanty (fielding grounder, "Delahanty, 2d B., Phila.") dating from his second year in the majors with the Philadelphia Nationals. Delahanty is one of the rarest of all Old Judge Hall of Famers, and in our experience, this is a particularly rare pose among the six Delahanty poses in the N172 set. This is the first Delahanty fielding pose we can recall ever offering. There are very few baseball cards of Delahanty, due to his untimely and tragic death in 1903, and the fact that few baseball card sets were issued during the years in which he played (1888 to 1903). Delahanty was one of the premier stars of the nineteenth century. This card has strong contrast, a few light corner surface creases and a tiny surface chip in the upper left (of little or no consequence), very light, even corner wear, and a very slight diamond cut. The blank reverse has minor back damage including a hint of paper loss from scrapbook removal, which is largely responsible for its extremely modest technical grade. The photo is bright, crisp, and clean. This is a beautiful card and an exceptional example of one of the most highly prized and significant rarities in the N172 Old Judge set. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
