1889 N172 Old Judge Kid Nichols - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $15,275

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. Highest-graded example by SGC! Absolutely stunning ultra high-quality N172 of Hall of Famer Charles "Kid" Nichols (pitch-right hand behind back, "Nichols, P., Omahas"), picturing Nichols with Omaha in 1889 just prior to joining the Boston Nationals the following year. Kid Nichols is, in our experience, without question one of the rarest of all N172 Hall of Famers. Nichols was only issued in 1889 and in addition to being one of the most difficult to find of all Old Judge Hall of Famers, it is also his rookie card. 1889 copyright dated Old Judges are relatively scarce and they are often found with poor photo quality. The photo quality on the offered example is extraordinary. The image really "pops," which is rare for Old Judges and, in the eyes of most collectors, the single most desirable quality an Old Judge card can possess. Grading companies take corner wear, back damage, and many other condition factors into account, but do not place the same emphasis on photo quality as do collectors. The clarity of the photo of Nichols on this card is virtually unimprovable. With a loop we can see every wrinkle in his shirt and pants, and even the laces on his shoes. It doesn't get much better than this for Old Judge photo quality. Bright and crisp, with only the lightest hint of even corner wear, perfect centering, and a tiny mark on the reverse near the right edge (of no consequence). This is an outstanding N172 Old Judge of Charles "Kid" Nichols, that would be a significant addition to the most advanced Old Judge, nineteenth-century, or Hall of Famer card collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $15,275
