1953 Topps #82 Mickey Mantle SGC NM 84

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,231

Graded NM 84 by SGC. Extremely attractive high-grade example of Mickey Mantle's second Topps card. One of card collecting's greatest classics, Mantle's second Topps card is the key to the 1953 Topps set, and one of the most popular of all postwar baseball cards. This particularly strong and striking example is bright and clean, both front and back, has four sharp corners showing just the slightest hint of wear, with particularly strong colors, and centered very slightly to the top right. This card was put aside as a special gem in the 1970s for his personal collection by a longtime collector (who, it is interesting to note, was one of the most prominent professional photographers in the field for baseball cards, supplying the images for thousands of cards). When we sent this gem in for grading, we thought it might have even graded higher. This is an exceptional high-grade example of one of collecting's most famous cards that would be a worthy cornerstone to either a high-grade 1950s Mantle card collection or any world-class collection of classic baseball cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,231
