1886-1887 N172 Old Judge "Watch" Burnham (Portrait with Bowler Hat) - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,410

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. Highest-graded example by SGC! Incredible ultra high-grade example of this particularly rare and distinctive N172 portrait pose (with bowler hat) of Indianapolis Hoosiers manager George Walter "Watch" Burnham, with one of the finest, most flawless images that we have ever seen on any Old Judge card. This is also an extremely rare card in the Old Judge set, as well as being a particularly desirable portrait card. Burnham managed the Hoosiers of the National League for only twenty-eight games in 1887. Prior to managing the Hoosiers, he was a Major League umpire in the National League. In 1883, he called balls and strikes for a no-hitter thrown by "Old Hoss" Radbourn. Legend has it that he got his nickname ("Watch") when it was discovered that a gold presentation watch that was given to him was actually arranged to be presented and was paid for by Burnham, and was not the generous gift of admiration and respect that he led others to believe. Bright and crisp, with four sharp corners, absolutely perfect contrast and photo quality, superb clarity, and a flawless surface. Perfectly clean both front and back. If not for the 80/20 left-to-right centering this card would have undoubtedly received a much higher grade. This is a stunning and extremely rare N172 Old Judge pose. It would be hard to imagine a more impressive example. This card is a gem! Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,410
