1941 R336 Play Ball Complete Set (72)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $10,575

Extremely attractive medium-grade complete set of the 1941 Play Ball series issued by Gum, Inc., one of card collecting's all-time classic gum issues, highlighted by what are among the most desirable cards of many of the era’s key stars, including Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Pee Wee Reese. We have selected thirteen cards to be graded by PSA. Keys: #1 Miller (Vg-Ex), 4 Derringer (PSA EX 5), 6 Hubbell (Gd-Vg), 8 Ott (PSA EX 5), 10 Vaughan (PSA VG-EX 4), 13 Foxx (Vg-Ex/Ex), 14 T. Williams (PSA EX 5), 15 Cronin (Ex-Mt), 18 Greenberg (PSA EX 5), 19 Gehringer (PSA EX-MT 6), 20 Ruffing (PSA VG-EX 4), 39 Henrich (Ex), 54 Reese RC (PSA EX-MT 6), 60 Klein (PSA EX-MT 6), 61 V. DiMaggio (ink on the upper left corner, otherwise Ex), 63 D. DiMaggio (Vg), 64 Doerr (PSA EX 5), 70 Dickey (PSA EX-MT 6), 71 J. DiMaggio (PSA Authentic, black ink added in the upper left corner, otherwise Ex), and 72 Gomez (PSA VG-EX 4). The balance of the cards grade 65% Vg-Ex to Ex (with a few slightly better), and 35% Vg. Technically the set falls into the “very strong medium" grade category, but has an overall presentation of a technically much more expensive and higher-grade set. Early sets in this grade are especially desirable, representing the most solid and least volatile value in the world of vintage cards. The SMR value for twelve of the thirteen PSA-graded cards (not including #71 DiMaggio encapsulated authentic and the 59 ungraded cards) is $3,195. Total 72 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $10,575
