1887 N172 Old Judge Mike "King" Kelly - "WOW!!!"

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $8,813

Graded EX 60 by SGC. A case could be made that this card really needs only a picture and one-word description ("WOW!"). Presented is a simply incredible ultra high-grade 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer Mike "King" Kelly in a fielding pose (hands chest high), identified as "$10,000 Kelly" (a nickname Kelly earned when he was sold from Boston to Chicago following the 1887 season for this then unheard of sum). This card is far more extraordinary than suggested by its SGC-assigned grade. This card is not to be believed! All it takes is one glance to understand. This is a card that makes even the most advanced and jaded collector literally do a double-take. The quality of the image rivals the best we have ever seen on any Old Judge card ever. It just happens to feature Mike "King" Kelly. Few Old Judges have survived in this type of extraordinary like-new condition. The card is flawlessly bright and crisp; perfectly clean both front and back, with sharp corners, and with an unimprovable photo image with flawless clarity and unrivaled contrast. Centered slightly towards the bottom right (the cause of the SGC downgrade from a more lofty grade level). We grade this card Ex-Mt or better, but for this miracle card, the grade is really beside the point. No grade can capture the appeal of this card. This is an outstanding, uncommonly impressive Old Judge, a one-in-a-million example, of the legendary Mike "King" Kelly, one of nineteenth-century baseball's greatest stars, with an extraordinary Mint-quality visual appeal that is rarely seen on any Old Judge or nineteenth-century card. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
