1888 N172 Old Judge Mickey Welch

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,998

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. One of only two graded at this level by SGC. Near Mint eye-appeal. Absolutely stunning high-grade N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer “Smiling” Mickey Welch of the New York Giants (Right hand at right thigh, "Welch, New Yorks"). This card is a gem, with outstanding photo quality, superb clarity, four sharp corners, and a flawless surface. Perfectly fresh and crisp with no creases. Centered just a hint to the left (45/55 L/R). The front of this card easily grades Near Mint. The card has been downgraded by SGC due to an area of slight lightening on the reverse that is almost certainly the result of the card long ago being glued into an album and then being carefully removed. The card most certainly otherwise has a Near Mint appearance. This is a magnificent, very high quality Hall of Famer Old Judge example of "Smiling" Mickey Welch, one of the most legendary Hall of Fame pitchers of the nineteenth century. Welch was the Major League's third 300-game winner. During his thirteen Major League seasons, he won twenty or more games nine times, including seven straight years. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,998
