1928-1936 "R" Premium Card Hall of Famer Rookie Collection (11)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058

Collection of eleven Hall of Famers, spanning the years of 1928 to 1936, each of which is the earliest or one of the earliest issued cards for the respective Hall of Famer, from six different "R" or gum-card premium sets. All the cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA or SGC. 1) 1928 R315 "Portraits and Action" (2 cards): Averill (SGC AUTH, irregular cut) and Hubbell (PSA EX-MT 6; it is interesting to note that Hubbell's first name is misspelled "Karl" on this card). 2) 1929 R316 Kashin Publications (3 cards): Klein (PSA EX 5), Manush (PSA EX-MT 6; Manush's first name is misspelled "Harry" on this card), and Ott (SGC VG 40). 3) 1934 R313A Gold Medal Flour: Medwick (SGC VG/EX 50). 4) 1936 R312 (2 cards): DiMaggio (SGC VG 40; DiMaggio’s name is misspelled “DiMagio” on this card) and Mize (SGC VG/EX 50). 5) 1936 R314 Goudey "Wide Pen" Type 1: DiMaggio/McCarthy (SGC GOOD 30; this is the key card from the set ). 6) 1937 R314 Goudey "Wide Pen" Type 4 (2 cards): Doerr (PSA PR-FR 1; Doerr’s name is misspelled “Doeer” on this card) and Feller (PSA VG 3; this is one of the key cards from the set). Premiums have received relatively little attention from collectors compared to traditional gum cards of the era, and in addition to the significance of their featuring the earliest-issued rookie cards of many players, a case can easily be made that they represent one of the best values of all 1930s baseball issues. Total 11 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,058
