1914 E224 "Texas Tommy" Type 1 - Tris Speaker

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,700

Graded POOR 10 by SGC. Rare "Texas Tommy" Type 1 of Tris Speaker, of the "Boston Red Sox." Don't be fooled by the technical grade on this card! This is an extremely impressive looking example of one of Tris Speaker's rarest cards, with an appearance far superior to its SGC assigned grade. In fact, this is the first "Texas Tommy" of Tris Speaker we have ever offered. This card features a very unusual batting image of Hall of Famer Tris Speaker that is unique to this set. Various small faults, including some light creasing, a tiny edge tear, and a small surface scrape on the reverse, are responsible for the technical condition downgrade, but these faults, while present, are minor, and in our opinion detract very little from its overall strong appearance; this is a card that's hard not to like! It also has a particularly clean reverse, which is especially desirable for sample cards from this set. Little is known about the product with which "Texas Tommys" were issued, but Jefferson Burdick believed it to have been a candy issue. "Texas Tommy" Type 1 cards each have the headline "Texas Tommy" printed on the reverse, below which is a very substantial biography (as opposed to Type 2 cards which have blank backs). This is an outstanding card, an extreme rarity, and one of the most distinctive and interesting of all Tris Speaker cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000.
