1911 T3 Turkey Red #27 Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,115

Graded VG 40 by SGC. The T3 Turkey Red is one of Christy Mathewson’s most impressive and classic cards. Mathewson, of course, is one of the key Hall of Famers in the Turkey Red set, which is universally recognized as one of the most substantial and beautiful sets ever produced. This example is bright and clean, both front and back, with bold colors, no creases, and centered a hint to the left. The only noticeable flaws are its evenly rounded corners and light stains in the lower left corner (border area only). Technically in Very Good condition, this is a card which aside from the noted flaws displays as Excellent condition, and provides collectors a rare, relatively affordable alternative to a far more expensive high-grade example without compromising on all of the most important display value qualities of the card. Sharp corners are great, but they're not worth the extra money to everyone. (In Ex-Mt condition, for example, this card lists for an SMR value of $15,000.) This is an extremely impressive looking example of one of card collecting's most classic cards, in a very desirable medium grade. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,115
