1911 T205 Gold Border Walter Johnson - SGC NM 84

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,875

Graded NM 84 by SGC. One of only two examples graded at this level by SGC, with just one graded higher (NM+ 86). Absolutely stunning, ultra high-grade example of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson from the T205 Gold Borders, one of the great classics from one of the most popular of all 1910-era tobacco issues. This is a remarkably sharp and incredibly high grade example for any T205 Gold Border tobacco card, let alone one of Walter Johnson. For all the thousands of T205s REA has handled over the years, this is without question the finest T205 Johnson card that REA has ever offered. Especially if one is familiar with seeing many other T205 Johnson examples, it is impossible to look at this card without saying "Wow.” The card has only the slightest hint of white at the extreme tips of only two corners, visible only under the closest inspection, and the most minute hint of chipping (even harder to see) to the gold near the center of the extreme edge of the left border; otherwise the easily chipped gold borders are without any white showing whatsoever. Centered 45/55 left to right and 40/60 top to bottom, with a natural diamond cut (which is a positive attribute in the eyes of many collectors in that it is an indication of a natural factory cut). This striking card has flawless colors. The reverse of the card is also exceptionally bright and perfectly clean. Advertising for Sweet Caporal on reverse. This is a gem of a card, and all the more so in light of the fact that Walter Johnson is particularly difficult to find in high grade. This may relate to the fact that Johnson appears to be rarer in any condition than many other T205s, including some other key Hall of Famers. For example, the PSA population report shows a total of 410 Christy Mathewson and 385 Ty Cobb T205 examples graded, but only 181 Walter Johnson. This is a world-class ultra high-grade T205 example of Walter Johnson, one of the most popular Hall of Famers, from one of collecting's most classic and condition-sensitive sets. The equivalent SMR value is $7,500. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000+. SOLD FOR $5,875
