1910 E103 Williams Caramel Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,231

Graded VG 3 by PSA. One of only three examples graded at this level. (The highest-graded E103 Mathewson is only one grade higher.) Extremely high grade example of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in a portrait pose from the highly desirable E103 Williams Caramel series. This is one of Mathewson’s scarcest, most striking, and all-around most highly regarded cards. The image on this card is the same as that used to produce both the M116 Sporting Life and 1915 E145 Cracker Jack series. This is a particularly strong card for the grade, with only the evenly rounded corners keeping it from a higher grade. Bright and clean, perfectly centered, with a crisp portrait, and a bold red background. No major creases. The blank back is also bright and clean, with one insignificant spot (of no consequence) at the top portion of the card. This is an exceptional example of a key Hall of Famer from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $3,231
