1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders Near-Complete Set (49/50)

Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $4,113

Presented is a near-complete set of 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders (49 of 50 cards). Missing just one common (#18 Cole/Kling) for completion. Nine cards are Ex, thirty-one range from Vg to Vg-Ex/Ex, six range from Gd to Gd-Vg, and three lesser. This is a very attractive complete set of this classic tobacco issue. As is often the case with T201 Mecca Double Folders, most cards appear Ex (or better) at a glance and have been downgraded due to the minor flaws so common to the issue. The thin stock makes them especially susceptible to very light corner rounding and light paper wrinkles. We have selected three cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: Baker/Collins (Gd-Vg), Bender/Oldring (Vg), Bergen/Wheat (Vg), Bresnahan/Huggins (Vg-Ex), Bridwell/Mathewson (SGC VG/EX 50), Brown/Hofman (Ex), Byrne/Clarke (Vg/Vg-Ex), Chance/Evers (SGC EX 60), Chase/Sweeney (Vg), Cicotte/Thoney (Gd-Vg), Cobb/Crawford (SGC VG 40), Dougherty/Lord (Ex), Falkenberg/Lajoie (Vg-Ex), Gardner/Speaker (Vg), Jennings/Summers (Vg), Johnson/Street (Vg), Lake/Wallace (Vg-Ex), McCarty/McGinnity (Ex), and Payne/Walsh (Ex). Though not high-grade by PSA or SGC standards, this set is far above average for Mecca Double Folders, with eye-appeal far better than suggested by the technically accurate grades listed above. This is a bright, clean, and (with few exceptions) very consistent complete set (minus one common card) of one of the era's most classic tobacco issues. Because there are two players on each card, the 50-card T201 set features 100 different players, including twenty Hall of Famers. The equivalent SMR value for just the three SGC-graded cards (not including the 46 ungraded cards!) is $1,500. Total 49 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500.
