1910-1912 T215 Red Cross Tobacco Type 1 - Christy Mathewson - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $5,875

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Highest-graded example! SGC has graded a total of only seventy-eight examples of T215 Red Cross (Type I) to date. Only one other Red Cross Type 1 Mathewson has ever been graded by SGC (a Vg example). This is an extremely attractive T215 of Christy Mathewson (white cap), one of the key cards to this elusive and incredibly rare tobacco set. T215 Red Cross are one of tobacco-card collecting's most overlooked issues. Very similar in design and borrowing images from the T206 set, T215 Red Cross cards are believed to have been issued exclusively in the Louisiana area. The offered T215 of Christy Mathewson is a gorgeous example. The card is perfectly clean both front and back, with brilliant colors, and even wear to the slightly rounded corners. Centered just a hint to the top (approximately 40/60 T/B) with a very slight tilt to the image. The Red Cross advertisement on the back is centered slightly to the left (when held horizontally as intended) and is boldly printed in red against a brilliant off-white background. It is rare to find any T215 Red Cross Tobacco in any grade, let alone an exceptionally high-grade example of a key Hall of Famer. This is an extremely attractive and (for this issue) very high-grade example of a very significant and rare Christy Mathewson card which would be a highlight card in any Hall of Fame, sample, or rare vintage baseball-card collection. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000.
