1911-1914 D304 Brunners Bread Ty Cobb - PSA EX 5

Starting Bid - $10,000, Sold For - $29,375

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Only one example of this important card graded higher. Stunning example of Hall of Famer Ty Cobb, the key card from the extremely rare 25-card D304 Brunners Butter Krust brand bread (General Baking Co.) series. This is one of Ty Cobb's rarest and most striking cards, and is universally recognized, with good reason, as one of the great classics of all vintage cards. Issued by a bakery in the Buffalo, New York, area, D304s are known with five different back styles (Brunners, Butter Krust, General Baking Co., Weber Bakery, and Martens Bakery). Similar in design to tobacco and candy cards of the era, Brunners measure slightly larger than T206s, at 1.75 x 2.5 inches, and are actually considerably rarer than most 1910-era “E” and “T” card issues. The fronts feature very attractive full-color illustrations, each of which is unique to this issue. In recent years collectors have shown a growing appreciation for the mystique of the rarest vintage-card issues. D304s certainly fall into this category, and have always been appreciated but are rarely offered. D304 sets were issued in 1911, 1912, 1913, and 1914. This is a very sharp-looking card in all respects with extraordinary eye-appeal, centered just the slightest hint to the right (approximately 55/45 L/R), with brilliant colors, flawless registration, and four square corners with only the slightest hint of wear. The back of the card features advertising for Brunners Butter-Krust brand bread which is boldly printed in green. A few very small and extremely light spots of toning on the reverse are of no consequence and mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy. This is a very attractive and extremely high grade example (second only to the famous and unbelievably high grade PSA NM-MT 8 example which is also featured in this auction) of one of Ty Cobb’s and all of card collecting's rarest, most majestic, and revered prewar cards. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $20,000+.
