1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramel Collection Including Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson (30)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,525

Collection of seventeen different (plus thirteen duplicates, for a total of thirty cards) E95 Philadelphia Caramel cards including twelve Hall of Famers, highlighted by Ty Cobb, two Christy Mathewsons, and two Eddie Planks. These cards are part of one of the most substantial original-owner caramel card collections we have ever offered. The entire collection of over 350 1910-era candy cards (plus over 200 tobacco cards) have been consigned to this auction (all appear in the Internet-only section of the auction), and have been saved for decades by the family of the original owner. The 25-card E95 set was issued in 1909 by the Philadelphia Caramel Co. of Camden, New Jersey. This set is of even greater significance than many other caramel card issues in that the E95 artwork was not reissued by other manufacturers, as was so widespread with other “E” card issues. The designs used in E95 are unique to the set. This is a low-grade collection, with condition ranging from Poor to Fair (with a few slightly better). We have selected one card (Ty Cobb) to be graded by SGC. Highlights: three Chance (Fr and two Pr), Cicotte ("Black Sox" member, Pr), Cobb (GOOD 30), Collins (Pr), two Crawford (Fr and Pr), Evers (Pr), two Mathewson (Fr and Pr), and two Plank (Fr and Pr). This collection has an impressive concentration of key Hall of Famers and represents a very substantial and relatively affordable start to collecting one of the era's most popular sets. Total 30 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
