The Under The Stairs Nineteenth-Century Non-Sport Tobacco "Large Card" Collection (430 cards)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,050

Extremely substantial and eclectic collection of 458 nonsport tobacco cards from the nineteenth-century, including many very unusual highlights (see Internet images) and representation from twenty-three different "Large card" issues. This collection was consigned to us from a noncollector who had these cards in the closet for over twenty years. The cards were discovered in the 1980s under the staircase of their home, a very old house, during some work at their home, and have been put away safely ever since. This is a very impressive untouched group of nineteenth-century tobacco "Large cards" with many highlights. The only card we have separated from the collection is a N150 of boxer John L. Sullivan, which is offered separately as its own lot. Most of the cards are clean and crisp with an Excellent appearance overall. (Technically most would grade between Vg-Ex and Ex). The collection is comprised of the following: Duke's: 1) N100 Bicycle and Trick Riders (22 cards, 20 of the 25 in the set). 2) N101 Breeds of Horses (17 cards, 13 of the 25 in the set). 3) N103 Burlesque Scenes (3 cards). 4) N105 Cowboy Scenes (8 cards). 5) N109 Flags and Costumes (complete set of 25 plus three duplicates). 6) N110 French Novelties (42 cards). 7) N111 Gems of Beauty (16 cards). 8) N113 Habitations of Man (2 cards). 9) N117 Industries of States (2 cards). 10) N122 Novelties - Girls on Objects (10 cards, 7 different). 11) N128 Snapshots from Puck (25 cards, 21 of the 25 in the set). 12) N129 Stars of the Stage - First Series (24 cards, 23 of the 25 in the set). 13) N132 Stars of the Stage - Fourth Series (1 card). 14) N135 Talk of the Diamond (2 cards): After the Ball and A Foul Catch. 15) N150 Actors and Actresses (198 cards): includes eighteen "Navy Tobacco", 158 "Honest Long Cut", and twenty-two very scarce and unusual Honest Long Cut "small square ad insert at bottom" style cards. 16) N151 Actresses and Celebrities (1 card). 17) N155 Scenes and Buildings (3 cards). 18) N157 Sunny South Series (1 card). Various Other Brands: 19) N194 Kimball "Household Pets" (3 cards). 20) N264 Lorillard "Actresses" (3 cards). 21) N281 Buchner "American Scenes with a Policeman" (1 card). 22) N554 Finzer "Inventors and Inventions" (complete set of 10 plus six duplicates). 23) N651 Actresses 'Chowder Cut Plug' (2 cards). This is a very attractive and substantial mid- to high-grade collection of tobacco cards from twenty-three of the nineteenth century's most popular and classic sets. Also included are an additional twenty-eight N150 Actors and Actresses that have the ad clipped at the bottom which are not included in the counts above. Total 458 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
