1966 Topps Get Smart Uncut 5¢ Display Box Proof Sheet

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $705

Rare uncut display box proof sheet for the 1966 Topps Get Smart set. This box design was produced to hold twenty-four five-cent packs of Get Smart cards. The box lid features a photo of Maxwell Smart (Don Adams), Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), and Fang, Max's canine assistant. The side of the box advertises the "Free Secret Agent Kit" included in each package of cards. This extreme rarity survived only because it happened to be saved in the company's files and was sold years ago by Topps in the earliest days of the Topps Vault. Ideally, it is accompanied by a COA from the Topps Vault affirming its special provenance. While it is impossible to know how many of these display box proof sheets exist, this is the first example we have ever seen or offered. Get Smart, which debuted in 1965, was the brainchild of Mel Brooks and will forever stand as the ultimate sendup of the spy genre. The show, which introduced the world to KAOS, the cone of silence, Hymie the robot, and shoe phones, was also memorable for its repeated use of a number of key catch phrases that are still widely referenced today, including "Missed it by that much," "And loving it," and "Would you believe..." The sheet (19 x 22.5 inches) has a few very minor creases along the blank white border areas and is in extremely impressive Excellent condition overall. The box artwork remains in pristine Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 24 x 27 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $705
