1971 Topps Test "Rocks O' Gum Lids" Complete Set (55) Including Woody Gelman Card

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $411

This series issued by Topps in 1971 were lids designed to cap tubs of two different gum products: "Gum Berries" and "Rocks O' Gum." We should really refer to these as "printed in 1971" as opposed to "issued in 1971" as we don't believe they were ever actually issued! We've seen this crazy, colorful set in complete form only a couple of times over the years, and each time the tabs on the side of the lids (which allowed the gum tub buyer to pull the lid off the top of the tub) were unfolded, as is the case here, indicating that these examples were never issued. This is a totally overlooked, exotic, and in our experience, very rare Topps test issue. The offered set of fifty-five different lids advertises for "Rocks O' Gum" on the backs and is highlighted by the card picturing "Mr. Gelman" tied up in chair. Richard Gelman is one of the most legendary pioneers of collecting and was at this time head of the art department at Topps. There is little doubt that sneaking this inside joke into the set was the subject of great office fun for a department that designed products intended to reflect the irreverent cultural humor of the times. This same department came up with many other comic sets that are reminiscent of Mad magazine during this exciting era, including perhaps their greatest and most long-lasting idea: Wacky packages. Included is a "tub" sample that suggests that at least some of these lids were at least packaged as a test. Diameter of each lid: 1-7/8 inches. Nr/Mt condition overall. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$300. SOLD FOR $411
