1888 N151 Duke "Celebrities and Politicians" Collection (9)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,293

Collection of nine different cards from this extremely rare nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco-card set. Catalogued N151 and issued by Duke & Sons, the set features photographic portraits of people from all walks of life, including public officials, military heroes, presidents, actresses, and even a few children. The most desirable subjects to collectors, naturally, are cards featuring the most famous people of the era, and this collection is comprised exclusively of cards featuring such extremely noteworthy subjects. Reminiscent of Kalamazoo Bats, this is one of the great and most substantial ultra rare tobacco sets of the era. These are rarely found in even the most advanced collections. If these were baseball cards, as opposed to featuring "just" the greatest celebrities and public figures of the day, they would be worth a fortune! Eight of the cards measure 2.25 x 4 inches, and one is the smaller variation measuring 1-5/8 x 2-7/8 inches. The collection consists of the following: Josh Billings (extremely rare smaller size variety; great sample card, should probably be catalogued as a separate set), Peter Cooper, General Dix, James A. Garfield, W.F. Grace (identified on the bottom as "Ex-Mayor of New York"), Horace Greeley, John A. Logan, Philip Sheridan (identified on the bottom as "Gen. U.S.A."), and Prince Von Bismarck. Two cards are in Ex condition, two cards are Vg-Ex, four cards are Vg, and one is slightly lesser. This is an extremely substantial group of exceptional pre-1900 nonsport tobacco-card rarities. Total 9 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
