1910 E90-2 American Caramel Honus Wagner

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $8,225

Graded VG-EX+ 4.5 by PSA. Outstanding Honus Wagner from the 1910 E90-2 American Caramel set. The only example graded at this level. Of the forty E90-2 Wagners graded in the entire history of PSA, only seven have been graded higher (and all of these are EX 5, none graded higher). This is a stunning example of this very scarce and popular card which is so similar in appearance to the famous T206 Wagner and dates from the same era. Honus did not want to encourage youngsters to smoke but had no problem with promoting candy. The "Flying Dutchman" is the key card in the 1910 E90-2 American Caramel set. Rarely does an example of this classic card have such extraordinary eye-appeal. This is a gorgeous card, with outstanding color, perfect registration, and an extremely bold blue background. The card has light, even corner wear, an extremely clean and crisply printed back, and appears to have been downgraded from EX by PSA only due to the slightest hint of too much corner wear. It is clearly close to EX and we wouldn't be surprised if this card did not have an overall appearance superior to a PSA EX 5. This is a tremendous high-grade example of one of prewar-card collecting's most desirable and classic cards, and a card which, with good reason, continues to grow in popularity and stature. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000++.
