1888 N162 Goodwin Beecher and 1894 N302 Mayo's Cut Plug Hinkey

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,938

Collection of two all-time classic nineteenth-century football cards, dating from 1888 and 1894. Both cards have been graded and encapsulated GOOD 30 by SGC. 1) 1888 N162 Goodwin & Co Beecher: A very presentable example of the very first football card from this very popular and colorful set of fifty, issued by Old Judge and Gypsy Queen. Accurately graded due to various small flaws but still attractive, bright and crisp, with brilliant colors. 2) 1894 N302 Mayo's Cut Plug Frank Hinkey: Extremely sharp-looking example of legendary Yale end Frank Hinkey in a portrait pose from the highly desirable N302 Mayo's football series. This is a very bright and crisp card, with almost no wear to the condition-sensitive edges and corners. Downgraded from strong Excellent only because of a single somewhat heavy (but not breaking the surface) horizontal crease through the center. N302 Mayo's Cut Plugs are universally recognized as one of the rarest and most important of all football-card sets. They are the very first football-card set and the only nineteenth-century card issue devoted exclusively to football. The set features Ivy League college football players of the day. Frank Hinkey is one of the three key cards to the set (along with Poe and the "Anonymous" player card). Hinkey is widely considered the hardest tackler in nineteenth-century football and was voted a four-time first team All-American. Walter Camp, the father of American football, called him the greatest football player of all time. Hinkey never left the field due to injury, leaving his teammates to refer to him as "The Disembodied Spirit." Condition is very strong for this cardp; like their baseball counterparts that are identical in design, Mayo's Cut Plugs are very susceptible to corner and edge wear due to their easily chipped black borders. When it comes to prewar football-card collecting, N302 Mayo's Cut Plugs will always be recognized as one of the few most significant sets, and the N302 of Frank Hinkley will always remain one of football-card collecting's key rarities. This is a very sharp-looking pair of key cards, each one of the most important cards in its respective set and each one of the most famous football cards of the era. Total 2 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
