1910 E90-2 American Caramel Honus Wagner

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $6,463

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Only one example ever graded higher. Honus Wagner, from the 1910 E90-2 American Caramel set. This is an exceptionally strong and attractive example of one of prewar collecting's most classic cards. When we checked the SGC population report, we were surprised to find exactly how difficult this card is to find in high grade: Of the forty examples graded by SGC to date, only one has ever been graded higher than the offered card (a single SGC EX 60 example). The E90-2 American Caramel set was regionally issued in the Pittsburgh area, and features only members of the Pirates, the National League champions of the previous year. This is one of Honus Wagner's most striking and popular cards, and is particularly noteworthy to collectors and noncollectors alike in that it features a portrait image reminiscent of that on his famous T206 card. This card has very strong eye appeal. The colors are bright and Wagner’s image is striking. The card has even corner wear and a hint of toning on the reverse. This is a stunning mid- to high-grade example of this card, which is universally recognized as among the key to the E90-2 set and one of the most classic and popular of all 1910-era Honus Wagner cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+.
