1910 E78 "Set of 25" Prize Fighters - James Jeffries

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $705

Graded VG-EX+ 4.5 by PSA. Highest-graded example by PSA! Extremely rare E78 "Set of 25" candy card features the legendary Hall of Famer James Jeffries in a classic boxing stance. This is an extremely rare card in any condition, and one we do not recall offering before. The manufacturer of E78 is unknown. This is a very striking card, and one that is all the more noteworthy in that the boxing pose of Jeffries on this card is unique to this series. Bright and crisp, with extremely bold colors, and just a hint of light, even corner wear. Extremely clean, both front and back, with a very light surface wrinkle near his left leg, and centered towards the top right (approximately 60/40 L/R and 30/70 T/B) with a slight tilt to the image. The back provides a checklist of the twenty-five cards in the set. Compared to baseball cards of the era, these early boxing cards, which are at least as scarce, represent a particularly outstanding value. Baseball and boxing caramel cards, of course, tend to be far rarer than their tobacco-card counterparts, and that is certainly the case with E78s. This is a stunning Hall of Famer example from one of the rarest of all the 1910-era boxing candy issues. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $705
