1914 John McGraw Photo

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $235

Original press photo, culled from The Chicago Sun Times archives, capturing John McGraw as manager of the New York Giants. The bust-length image pictures McGraw in uniform as he surveys the playing field at the Polo Grounds. It is interesting to note that this photo was originally used by the papers in conjunction with a story regarding the upstart Federal League. Printed text on the reverse reads in part: "President Ward of the Brooklyn Federal League club is quoted as saying that his circuit would willingly pay $250,000 if the new organization could land Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker, and Johnny McGraw. Of course, there is no chance for the Federals to land all five or even one of the mentioned." Also appearing on the reverse are two date stamps ("Mar 30 1914" and "Jan 18 1944") as well as a later newspaper clipping and a number of period editorial notations. The New York Giants were the reigning National League champions at the start of the 1914 season, and it is no small wonder that the Federal League would have placed both McGraw and Mathewson at the top of their "want list." Of all the players mentioned, it seems incomprehensible that McGraw, a stalwart supporter of the National League, would have ever abandoned the Giants for a similar position in the Federal League, regardless of the amount of money offered him. The photo (8 x 10 inches) has a number of flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including a large corner chip in the upper right, edge tears, surface wrinkles, and what appears to be a slightly trimmed top border. While technically in Fair to Good condition, McGraw's image is free of any significant defects and the photo presents with flawless clarity. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
