1907 Wolverine News Postcard Ty Cobb - Portrait (Rookie)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $4,406

Graded VG 3 by PSA. Only example graded at this level by PSA, with just one graded higher (PSA VG-EX 4); very conservatively graded, in our opinion this card is deserving of a higher grade. This is a very attractive example of one of Ty Cobb's true rookie cards, from the highly regarded Wolverine News Detroit Tigers postcard set, issued in 1907. This card (along with the Dietsche postcard of Cobb issued in the same year) is considered by many collectors to be Ty Cobb's true rookie card. A number of other issues can also lay claim to that important distinction. While we realize that the definition of what is a player's rookie card can sometimes be very controversial and can vary from collector to collector, the postcard issues of 1907 are worthy of consideration for that claim, a distinction that is reasonably shared with several issues dating from Cobb's earliest days in the Majors. This example has never been mailed. There is no writing on the postcard reverse. Minor wear to the corners and a single very minor crease in the lower right corner (these are very minor flaws, this card has an overall appearance approaching Ex). The Wolverine News Detroit Tigers postcard of Ty Cobb represents an outstanding overlooked value compared to most other early Cobb cards, including those issued a couple of years later which are also widely recognized by many collectors as Cobb's rookie cards. This is a very attractive example of one of Cobb's most elusive early cards and one that qualifies as one of his true rookie cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $4,406
