1918 Boston Red Sox (vs. St. Louis) Program

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $588

Rare eight-page regular-season Boston Red Sox program dating from the club's 1918 World Championship season. This particular program was issued for a game against the St. Louis Browns. The preprinted lineups include Ruth, Hooper, Strunk, and Bush for Boston, and Sisler, Demmitt, and Tobin for St. Louis. Neatly scored in pencil to record a 7-0 Boston victory. Research indicates that the only 7-0 Boston home victory over St. Louis in 1918 occurred on Wednesday, July 17th. Boston's complete 1918 home schedule appears on one of the interior pages. 1918 marked the year in which Ruth began his transition from pitcher to everyday outfielder. Ruth started twenty games on the mound and also appeared in fifty-nine games as an outfielder, plus an additional thirteen at first base. In this program, both Ruth and McInnis are listed in the cleanup spot at first base, but the original owner notes in pencil that Ruth saw action in left field on this day. Although Ruth only had 317 at bats in 1918, he still managed to lead the league in home runs with 11. He also added thirteen wins on the mound in leading Boston to its fourth World Championship of the decade. Regular-season Boston Red Sox programs dating from 1918 are exceedingly rare, almost to the point of being nonexistent ,and this extraordinary example is one of the very few we have ever seen. The program (7 x 10 inches) displays a few insignificant pressure indentations which affect both covers and all of the interior pages, but there are no tears associated with them. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $588
