1885 Base Ball ABC Illustrated Book

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,938

This classic 1885 chromolithographic children's book is illustrated with extraordinary full-color vignettes of children engaged in baseball games. Published by the famous McLoughlin Brothers in 1885, the book was intended for use by young children as an alphabet primer. Collectors have always prized this rare book for its tremendous graphics and display value. A higher-grade example of this book was featured in the 1999 Barry Halper auction, where it realized a final sales price of $3,737. This is a scarce book in any condition and only the second we have ever handled. The book (8.25 x 10.5 inches) displays separation of the covers along the bottom portion of the spine (the covers are both firmly attached) and three small pencil notations in the upper right corner of the front cover (appears to be the numbers "8," "3," and "9"). In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
