1961 Roger Maris Signed Postcard - Sam's Restaurant - 61st Home Run Ball!

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $353

In November 1961 highly successful California restaurateur Sam Gordon hit upon a great promotional stunt. After purchasing the ball Roger Maris hit for his record-breaking sixty-first home run for $5,000 from Sal Durante, Gordon decided to present it as a gift to Maris at a highly publicized ceremony held at his flagship eatery: Sam's Original Ranch Wagon in Sacramento, California. This real-photo postcard advertises for Sam's restaurant, and pictures Maris receiving the ball from Gordon at that ceremony. This advertising postcard is all the more noteworthy as it has been personally signed by Maris on the front. Although Maris' blue-ink signature is boldly penned, grading "8/9," it does contrast somewhat poorly against the dark background of his image. Even unsigned examples of this promotional postcard are desirable, as this is a fascinating period advertising postcard directly related to the great fanfare accompanying Maris' 61st home run, but signed examples of this card are particularly rare. The offered card (3.5 x 5.5 inches) has not been addressed on the reverse and is in overall Very Good to Excellent condition, with just a few tiny surface wrinkles and very minor corner wear. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $353
