1951 and 1952 St. Louis Browns Team-Signed Balls with Satchel Paige

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,293

Magnificent high-grade pair of St. Louis Browns team-signed balls dating, respectively, from 1951 and 1952, each including the signature of Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige. The outstanding condition of these balls is not surprising given their exceptional provenance. Both balls originate from the personal collection of Bob Bauman, who was a longtime Major League trainer with both the St. Louis Browns (1937-1953) and St. Louis Cardinals (1954-1988), and have been consigned to this auction directly by his son. (A total of eighty-four team-signed baseballs from the Bauman Collection, offered in twelve separate lots, are featured in this current auction.) Each ball displays only the lightest toning and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Paige was with St. Louis only for three seasons (1951, 1952, and 1953). 1951: twenty-four black-ink signatures (averaging “8”) on an ONL ball (the ball is actually an official minor-league ball, as it bears the facsimile signature of the Western League president on a side panel), including Paige (sweet spot), Taylor (Mgr., sweet spot), Garver, Delsing, Jennings, Lollar, Young, Arft, Marsh, Pillette, McDonald, Mapes, Wood and Berardino. 1952: twenty-seven blue-ink signatures (averaging “8”), including Paige, Marion (Mgr., sweet spot), Bearden, Young, Wertz, Dyck, Pillette, Cain, Bauman (team trainer from whom the ball originates), DeMaestri, Stuart, Kryhoski, Byrne, Moss, Courtney, Hogue, and Littlefield. The year, “’52,” is written in vintage blue ink on the ball label. Total 2 team-signed balls. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
