Babe Ruth Cut Signature in Framed Display

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,644

This decorative wall display is comprised of a large Babe Ruth cut signature mounted with the classic image of Ruth embracing Lou Gehrig on Lou Gehrig Day in 1939. The signature, scripted in black fountain pen on a segment of cream colored paper, grades a strong "8" and contrasts extremely well against the light background. The paper surrounding the Ruth signature appears to have been either cleaned or painted over. We have seen this before to conceal additional writing (in this case very likely a personal salutation), additional signatures, and/or notations to enhance display value, especially for framed display. It should be stressed, however, that his cosmetic enhancement, which has been expertly done, has not touched upon or affected the signature in any way, and does not detract in the least from the signature's outstanding display value. Together, the Ruth signature and photo create an extremely impressive display and tribute to the two greatest Yankee legends of all time. Both the cut (4.25 x 1.75 inches) and photo (7 x 9 inches; second generation) are in apparent Near Mint condition. Professionally matted and framed to total dimensions of 13.5 x 18.75 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
