This collection of fourteen St. Louis Browns team-signed balls, spanning the years 1938 through 1953 (the team's final year in St. Louis), is noteworthy for its many highlights as well as its special provenance. Each of these balls originates from the personal collection of Bob Bauman, who was a longtime Major League trainer with both the St. Louis Browns (1937-1953) and St. Louis Cardinals (1954-1988), and has been consigned to this auction directly by his son. (A total of eighty-four team-signed baseballs from the Bauman Collection, offered in twelve separate lots, are featured in this current auction.) Highlights include a 1944 team-signed ball from the Browns only pennant winning season, a 1945 ball with the signature of Pete Gray (one-armed outfielder) on the sweet spot, a 1952 ball with the signature of Satchel Paige, and another 1952 ball with the signature of Rogers Hornsby (Hornsby only managed the Browns for fifty-one games in 1952). In our listing for each ball we have duly noted all of the Hall of Fame signatures as well as those of the prominent players. Unless otherwise noted, all of the balls are official American League (Harridge) balls and display light overall toning. 1938: twenty-two green ink signatures (averaging “5/6”), including Clift (sweet spot), Boneetti (sweet spot), Kress, Hildebrand, McQuinn, Sullivan, Van Atta, Melillo (Mgr.), Bell, McQuillan, Heffner, and Cox. There is moderate bleeding to the signatures on one side panel and a green ink stain on the sweet spot affecting both signatures. Ex. 1941: eleven blue-ink signatures (averaging “6/7”): Clift (sweet spot), Swift (twice), Kramer, Trotter, McQuinn, Berardino (twice), Archie, Judrich, and one other (illegible). Vg-Ex. 1942: twenty-nine blue-ink signatures (averaging “5/6”) on a Harwood “Official League” ball, including Ferrell, Sewell, Hofmann (coach), Clift (sweet spot), Gutteridge (on ball label), McQuinn (sweet spot), Auker, Laabs, Judnich (on ball label), Stephens, Niggeling, Ferens, and Hayworth. The ball appears to have been coated with a thin layer of protective shellac. Ex. 1944: twenty-five blue or black-ink signatures (averaging “4”), including Sewell (Mgr., sweet spot), Kreevich (sweet spot), Jakucki (sweet spot), Turner, Zarilla, McQuinn, Stephens, Hollingsworth, Gutteridge, Shirley, Potter, Caster, Chartack, Muncrief, Byrnes, Galehouse, Christman, Hayworth, and Clary.
