1939 Walter Johnson Signed Check

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,293

Extremely rare large-format check (8.25 x 3 inches), dating from September 8, 1939, filled out and signed by Walter Johnson ("8/9"). This check is payable to "L. E. Johnson," very likely a relative and interesting also in that this provides a partial second "signature." It was not until the past few years that Walter Johnson personal checks were finally released by the Johnson family. Prior to this, Walter Johnson checks were virtually nonexistent in the collecting world. In total, approximately 300 checks survived and have been sold by the Johnson family. They are all gone. Three hundred may sound like a lot, but it is actually a very modest number compared with the quantities of Ruth and Cobb checks which have been absorbed by the collecting world. Of these 300 Johnson checks, fewer than 15 were large format in style. This is one of those few. The check has a single small, clean bank spindle-hole, a few tiny border tears, a chip in both the upper left and right corner, and normal bank cancellation stampings. In Very Good condition. The reverse of the check has been endorsed with an ink stamp ("L. E. Johnson"). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,293
