1933 Signed Edition of Who's Who in Major League Baseball - Author Speed Johnson's Personal Copy

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,058

Offered here is one of the all-time classic baseball books, the 1933 Who's Who In Major League Baseball by Harold (Speed) Johnson. While this important hard-bound volume has always been a requisite work for any substantial baseball library, the offered example is further distinguished by the fact that it not only boasts its rare original dust jacket, but was author Speed Johnson's personal copy. Former ownership by Johnson is evident by the fact that it has been signed by a number of players on the front flyleaf, the first of whom is Al Simmons, who prefaced his signature with the inscription "To my old pal 'Speed' - Al Simmons Sept 2nd/33." Also featured on the front flyleaf are the signatures of Dizzy Dean ("Sept 4/1933"), Frank Frisch, actor George Raft ("Sept 8, 1933"), Carl Hubbell, Lefty O'Doul ("Sept 13, 1933"), Travis Jackson, Hal Schumacher, and Bill Terry ("33 Giants 33"). All of the signatures have been scripted in blue fountain pen and grade either "9" or "10" with the exception of Terry (slight bleeding "8"). Included with this volume is the rarely seen four-page promotional mailer for the book featuring pricing information and a sample page (featuring Al Simmons). The 544-page book (9 x 11 inches), which is the standard edition (red cover), displays minor separation along the spine and is otherwise in Excellent condition. The dust jacket has some paper loss along the spine (the front cover is completely detached) and has been partially affixed to a heavy paper backing; otherwise, both covers are completely intact and display beautifully. This is an exceptional copy of this highly prized book, with nine signatures (including several Hall of Famers) that comes with the added provenance of originating from the personal library of the author. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $300+. SOLD FOR $1,058
