1889 M-UNC Police Gazette Cabinet Sam Thompson

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Extremely rare 1889 Police Gazette cabinet card of Hall of Famer Sam Thompson dressed in street clothes. In 1887 Thompson led the National League with 545 at-bats, 203 hits, 23 triples, 166 RBI (the highest RBI total in the nineteenth century), a .372 batting average, and a .571 slugging percentage. This is a very attractive card, with just a hint of soiling to the photo (maybe not worth mentioning but visible upon close inspection), a perfectly clean reverse, and some very light wear to the corners of the black mount. The missing corner in the upper right is in large part responsible for the harsh grade by SGC. This is a very impressive looking card which, aside from the corner chip in the upper right, has an otherwise overall Excellent appearance. This is an extremely rare Hall of Famer example from one of card collecting's rarest and most highly prized nineteenth-century cabinet-card issues. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,819
