1888-1889 A17 Allen & Ginter and A36 Goodwin Champions Albums (2)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,115

Two classic nineteenth-century premium sports albums: 1) Second Series 1889 A17 Allen & Ginter Premium Album featuring all 50 cards from the N29 Allen & Ginter set (including Ewing, etc.). The twelve interior pages are extremely strong, grading Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex+ overall). The front cover has a small erasure mark (where it was long ago priced at an antique shop) in the upper right corner and the original string binding has been separated from the bottom hole, but is otherwise in very clean Vg condition. 2) 1888 A36 Goodwin & Co. Album features images of all 50 cards from the spectacularly colorful N162 Old Judge & Gypsy Queen series. Baseball players include Anson, Kelly, Keefe, Brouthers, Glasscock, Caruthers, Dunlap and Andrews. Also included are the additional 42 stars of the sporting world. The N162 Old Judge & Gypsy Queen tobacco cards featured in this album are universally regarded as among the most beautiful and desirable of all pre-1900 tobacco issues. While the N162 cards were issued in packs with tobacco, the far rarer premium albums could only be obtained by mail in exchange for coupons packed with Old Judge & Gypsy Queen brand tobacco. The first page (one of the baseball pages) is partially stuck to the interior of the front cover but could be easily separated if desired (we have left it exactly as received). Good condition. These classic premium albums represent an outstanding value among nineteenth-century tobacco issues. Total 2 albums. Reserve $200. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $2,115
